Hotels get a guide to being found by AI. Agencies should run the same test

The news. The AI Hospitality Alliance, an industry group, has published a free guide called Hotel AI Visibility Criteria and KPIs. It is written for hotels that want to know what an AI assistant will find and say about them when a traveller asks where to stay. New personal assistants that plan trips and book on a user's behalf are the reason it came out now.

Four steps and one hard line

The guide has four steps. Define the guests you want and what makes the property different. Audit the website's access, structure and content. Test the answers AI tools actually give, for presence, accuracy and recommendation. Then measure, using 15 defined indicators.

The advice on basics is plain: pages that can be read, useful written content, current business profiles, and structured data that agrees with what a guest can read. The release points out that Google's own guidance says no special AI markup is required.

The strongest line is a warning: "website readiness and observed AI visibility require separate assessment." A well-built site does not guarantee a recommendation, and being visible does not mean a traveller can book.

Why it matters for the agency

Everything in this guide applies to a travel agency. Your clients are starting to ask an assistant before they message you. The question is what it says when they ask about you, or about the destination you know best.

The step most people skip is the third one: asking the real questions and writing down the real answers. I do it for our own data. The Gulf Outbound Hotel Index is public, with a permanent DOI, and I check what search engines and AI tools return for its name and for the questions it answers. Some answers cite it. Some still quote an old version. For some questions it does not appear at all. You only learn that by asking.

Pick five questions your best client would ask. Ask them this week, and save the answers.
