Morgan Stanley sees a new travel agent coming. It may also be a new middleman

The news. Morgan Stanley Research says AI agents could influence $55 billion to $85 billion in hotel-industry spending, counting the fees hotels pay to online travel agencies and their marketing budgets. Its head of US gaming, lodging and leisure research says the agents "could change how traveler intent is created, routed and monetized."

The note expects three things: more personalised search, more competition early in trip planning, and less reliance on online travel agencies. It also says larger hotel brands "could emerge as winners," because loyalty programmes and member rates give an agent something to work with.

The sentence near the end

The headline number is the part that will get repeated. The more useful line sits lower down. If AI platforms start charging travel companies for access, placement or bookings, "some of the costs reduced by agentic AI could reappear in a different form."

Read that again as someone who has sat in the middle of this trade. A new layer between the traveller and the room does not remove the middle. It moves it. The note says as much when it calls AI platforms "another intermediary" over time, and admits that how much booking really shifts between channels "remains uncertain."

Where the big-brand argument stops

Loyalty programmes help a chain. They do little for the hotel most of our clients actually booked. On one desk I ran, nearly seven in ten bookings went to hotels outside the hundred most-booked. Most of those properties have no member rate and no points for an agent to read.

So there are two markets inside this forecast. In the first, an agent reads a chain's feed and picks a room. In the second, somebody has to know that the small hotel exists, that it is any good, and which person to call there. That second market is where an agency earns its fee, and the note does not price it.

The practical question is not whether agents arrive. It is how much of what you sell sits in the part an agent can already read.

Of your last hundred bookings, how many were at a hotel with a loyalty programme?
