Southwest lets AI shop the flight. The booking stays on its own site

The news. Southwest Airlines has put a free plugin inside a popular AI chatbot. Travellers can look for destinations, compare cash fares and refine itineraries without leaving the chat. The plugin does not take the booking: once a traveller picks a flight, they are sent to Southwest.com to enter passenger details, pay and get a confirmation number. Southwest also notes that the chatbot's responses "could contain errors or omissions".

The airline kept the risky part at home

Southwest calls the plugin "the first step in a phased AI-powered booking approach". It is a careful first step. As The Points Party reports it, Southwest says the flights and fares shown in the chat are not a confirmed reservation or a guaranteed fare. Availability, schedules and fares are shown as of the time of the search. And if the chat and the website disagree, the information on Southwest.com at the time of booking controls.

Read those lines as an operator and the design is clear. AI gets the browsing. The airline keeps the price that counts, the payment and the confirmation number.

The disclaimer is a job description

"Errors or omissions" is a phrase every reservations agent knows from the other side. It is the distance between a price someone showed and a price someone confirmed. Southwest sells its own fares on its own systems, and it still will not let the chat's answer be final. That tells you how much weight the last step carries.

On the desks I ran, nearly half of the mail was not with the client at all. My archive holds more than 271,000 work emails, and 47.5% went back and forth with suppliers and hotels. That is the side of the work Southwest has kept away from the chat.

Why it matters for the agency

Southwest will not be the last. Travel Extra notes that a British airline launched a similar tool before it. Expect airlines and hotels to let travellers search inside chatbots while keeping the booking on their own sites.

For an agency, the lesson is the same split. Let the client shop wherever they like. Own the moment the price becomes a booking: check it, confirm it, and send the confirmation number from your own desk.

If an airline will not let a chatbot's fare be final, why would your client accept an unchecked one from you?
